Oral Health / Systemic Health

Oral hygiene directly influences your overall systemic health. Your oral/periodontal care is of our utmost priority. We customize your professional cleanings to properly care for your specific periodontal (gums & bone) needs. Whether a six month cleaning, more frequent 3-4 month cleaning or complete periodontal treatment, our doctors and hygienists always strive for the most thorough, productive and non-surgical therapy while maintaining your absolute comfort.

Professional teeth cleaning is the removal of dental plaque and tartar from teeth that you, as the patient cannot remove at home, to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Gum disease/periodontal disease causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss and is directly linked to heart disease, heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Symptoms of gingivitis/precursor to periodontal disease may include:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Gums that bleed easily when brushing, flossing, or eating
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • gums that have pulled away from the teeth

PERIODONTAL DISEASE

When gingivitis is left untreated, periodontitis results. This advanced form of gum disease may initially have symptoms similar to gingivitis, but can eventually produce others such as:

  • A chronic bad taste in the mouth
  • Foul breath that does not improve with brushing
  • Pus in between teeth
  • Gum recession or separation from teeth
  • Loose teeth or a shifting bite
  • Tooth loss
  • Bone necrosis

Studies show that periodontal disease is linked to complications with diabetes and pregnancy, and is known to increase the risk of heart disease, respiratory illness, and even dementia and Alzheimer’s.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms of gum disease, please contact BRSH Dental by calling (713) 660-0966 to schedule an appointment today.
